Cat Grooming
marytcombs asked:

I want to bring the “porch kitty” to the clippers. I’ve sort of adopted an outside cat who lives in the yard at my fourplex. He’s so cool but he has some mats in his fur. I want to bring him to the groomers. What’s a round-a-bout price for how much this should cost?

depends where you live, here in LA maybe 50 bucks? If they have to sedate him (which might be necessary because he is probably not accustomed to going to such places), it will be significantly more, like maybe 150. You should get him checked out at the vet, vaccinated & neutered if he’s not- there are organizations that can help with the cost.

$0 if you do it yourself (besides cost of combs and brushes).

A groomer would charge anywhere from $20 to unlimited depending on where you take it and what you are having done.

If it’s just the removal of matts and a basic clean up I wouldn’t imagine it would be more than $30 or so.

If you (and the cat) are patient sorts I’d give it a go on your own. You don’t need to do all the matts in one sitting either to give the poor thing a break.

To remove matts, I clip the matt about half way down the matted portion. No need to go all the way to the skin, then gently brush out the remainder of the matt. I like to use either a metal comb with a wide spread on the tines. When the comb passes through easily and there are no more tangles follow up with a soft brush. They actually come out quite easily.

If the mats are REALLY bad the cat may have to be shaved down. If there’s just “some mats” and they look like they can be worked out then the groomer would have to work at them with a comb and possibly clip just those mats out. So either way you’re talking about a bit more work than just, for example, giving a cat a bath. I inquired about having the groomers at PetSmart bathe my Persian since they have those powerful dryers that would get him dry quicker. I believe it was about $30 for the bath. So I’d expect grooming to the extent you need it to be at least $50.

Are you sure you can’t work these mats out yourself? Percy was quite matted when I first got him and I worked the mats out with a steeltoothed comb and then cut out a couple really bad ones and then gave him a bath once he was fully combed out. It was a challenge but not impossible and didn’t cost me anything other than some time, soaked clothing and one very pissed off cat lol
