Cat Grooming
stilettopanda asked:

I need to sedate my cat to shave his mats off, but I don’t actually want him to be sleeping because that could be dangerous. I bought a product called Comfort Time, which chilled him out so that he purred as I was grooming him, but it wore off way too quickly, is there anything else I could use? I know some people have used benedryl, and if so, what is the proper dose for a 22lb cat?

I wouldn’t be in this situation, but my regular groomer quit without any notification and everywhere else either doesn’t groom cats or is too expensive.
my groomer WAS at the vet’s office!

Ask your vet. I know my friend gets something for her dog when it storms out (the dog goes freakin’ mad) and she gets it from the vet….

Have you tried calling around for a vet that would shave his mats? Most do, although they probably won’t be as pretty as the groomers.

So call a different vet!

Maybe you should have brushed him more, so he wouldnt get mats.

You should ask your vet for the proper medicine and doseage for your cat, only he or she knows the health of your animal.

as your vet about a product called Promace, this should do the trick and will last much longer.

Don’t dope your cat up, especially an older one. Regular brushing with a stiff cat brush should get rid of the mats, and be quality play time with your cat. Never use a groomer that drugs your cat - that person doesn’t like cats!

You can ask your vet about Ace or Valium. Both are safe and can be dosed depending on the length of sedation required.

Also, try to brush your cat regulary to avoid mats.

And, yes, a vet will shave your cats mats, but it is a very painful and unpleasant experience for your cat. And no, it will not be pretty!

Benadryl is safe to use for cats. My vet had me use it when I took my cats on a road trip.
But it has to be Benadry with no added stuff to it. Get the 25 mg. tablets and break in two. Give 1/2 to your cat, no more than that.
But to be sure, call your vet to inquire about this.
